Like evil twins these two waves break over the same reef, one goes to the left - Pipeline, the other one takes the right - Backdoor. The surfer on the right already is in for a dive while the one on the left ... makes it!
Backdoor
Backdoor seems the easy one, but there is no easy exit. Either get munched in Off-the-Wall or make it through a hole to the back. On the right picture Sunny Garcia finds the easy way out.
1997 was a classic El Nino year, with parts of beaches and pieces of highway washed away. A little after the Pipemasters there was an attempt to run the Eddie at Waimea Bay but conditions were not good enough this winter.
