Menton 1979:
This is the year when BK went international, after extensive bike and train tours in Germany I felt fit for the European Rail experience. Inter Rail ticket in pocket and backpack on the shoulders I made it through ten different european countries, most with border controls and different currencies at the time, believe me, it was one big mess. Now most of these border controls have gone and the currency problem will get fixed soon.

After an exciting tour in Germany, 1979 I got international and started the tour in Switzerland. Not terribly exciting I quickly took the trains south into France an arrived on the legendary French Riviera. Until then I had seen the coast in TV and magazines but never the real thing. Railing in from Marseille the main traveller's hub Nice was too crowded and unfriendly stories circulated. Easy way out I took the next train to Menton.
Initially for its Youth Hostel, of course it was overbooked and I went to the beach. In early August the water was warm and after a little siesta I noticed quite a number of travellers with backpacks. I asked around a bit and it seemed ok to sleep here on the beach. Only I had no sleeping bag .. so I put on my thick jeans and parka which I had packed for the trip to Scotland. A part a little police hassle we slept well, after the first night in front of the Helios we split off a small group to stay at a better place, some steps east of the Westminster Hotel. I left my backpack in the locker at the train station and spent exciting days and nights on this beach. Trips to the vicinity, Nice, Monaco and Ventimiglia, gave me a better idea about this part of the Riviera and I promised to be back the next year.
