Exclusive JahTours Excursions from Menton[ Walk to Monaco ] [ Hike to Sospel ] [ Waterfall ]![]() Michele shows the Le Corbusier path in Roquebrune Menton to Monaco: Menton is an excellent base for many entertaining and exciting excursions. After a couple of days on the beach I met a group of girls who, under the influence of heavy sunbathing no doubt, asked me if I wanted to walk to Monaco! JahTours was not very popular in the early 80s and I had time for discoveries - next morning at 6 am we met on the Promenade de Soleil and left for the footpath around Cap Martin sneaking beyond Roquebrune and reaching Monaco through the backdoor. The girls were fun and the path with it's shadowy trees offers stunning views over Monaco, Menton, and far into Italy. We started early and by the time we arrived in Monaco we were longing to take a bath in the clear waters of the Principality. I often walked or jogged this path, alone or with lovely company, and I always look forward to the next time I can go there. The picture shows me in mid-air at the cliffs of Cap Martin. ![]() Cap Martin suicide stunt! Menton to Sospel: The walk around Cap Martin is easy compared to some of the hiking which starts in Garavan or just above the old town and leads straigth up to 3000 feet at Ormea, with stunning view over Menton and Monaco and the possibility to reach Sospel in another two hours walk. Sospel can also be reached by train from Nice and there is a bus service from Menton Gare Routiere. In old days Sospel was an important town on the road and railway from Nice to Northern Italy, nowadays the italian road from Cuneo to Ventimiglia offers faster access to the coast. Sospel is a good base for hiking adventures in the National Park du Mercantour, also a big place for mountain biking. Similar hiking and biking can be found around Menton backcountry villages Gorbio, Castellar, Castillon, St Agnese, and above Monaco with Peille and La Turbie. La Cascade! - Our most popular trip to the backcountry!
Waterfall special! In the early 80's I learned about a hidden waterfall in the mountains behind Menton. Between 1983 and 1989 this secret hideout place became our favorite spot for the hottest hours of the day. Just the mention of the french word 'cascade' made eyes and ears wide open and we quickly arranged a car to get there quick. We were rewarded by a world of quietness, fresh air and many of summer's blessings.
After its heydays in the mid-80s the waterfall has been closed and forgotten about for most of the 90s. Now local youth rediscover this fantastic place and if you visit, please keep the place clean, take your trash and respect the spirit of the place, so we can still have future generations enjoy this retreat from the noise of the coast.
After an eventful day night falls over Menton. Skin was burned, hearts were broken, and too much sand was in our sleeping bags.![]() © BK media systems 1996-2001 - All Rights Reserved. |
